The Legend of Kiwi and the Magic Recipes

Legend has it... that once upon a time, a big tropical storm blew into a tiny Caribbean island. It blew and blew and blew for days, it blew coconuts from their trees. It blew trees from the earth. It blew boats to the tropical forest. Then finally, it blew away.

During the storm, a tee-tiny blue-and-yellow Macaw named Kiwi had been hiding in a pirate cave. When he peaked out into the bright sun, he saw no one. His family's tree house in the coconut tree was gone. The coconut tree was gone! All that remained were a few his mom's magic recipes, which she had buried in a secret hiding place. He was all alone. After a few days of missing his family, this brave bird decided he better go look for them.

So Kiwi put his mom's magic recipes in a suitcase and flew and flew and flew some more, until he landed on a beautiful island in the West Indies. It looked a lot like home. Maybe his family was there? He looked in every coconut tree he could find. No family. But he did meet a green lizard name Silly Lilly, who told him she had heard about a beautiful place in America called the Keys. So he packed his bags again, but before he left, he filled his belly with some of the best food he had ever tasted. To wish him luck on his journey, Silly Lilly's gave him a few of her favorite recipes, too. When he put them in the suitcase, it glowed like the sun. They were magic recipes, too!

Then Kiwi flew and flew and flew until he was too tired to fly one more second. After a loooong nap in something called a palm tree, Kiwi woke to find that he was in a fun place, full of happy people. In fact, every day in the Keys was a great day. Kiwi learned to dance in the Key called Key West - and he loved it! He ate a lot of yummy food and made fun friends. His belly was always full! But he couldn't find his family. Even though Kiwi loved Key West, he wanted to find his family. So he packed his bags again. His new friends threw him a goodbye party full of food and even fireworks. They gave him some of their most secret recipes to remember them by. Sure enough, he carefully put them in his suitcase, and poof! They were magic, too!!

Kiwi was getting pretty big by now, and his belly was pretty full, but he flew and flew and flew as long and far as he could. Finally, he landed in an exotic place called South Carolina. He checked every single palm tree he could find, but he still couldn't find his family. What should he do?

Then a nice family came along, a different kind of family, not birds at all. Kiwi and his suitcase had been perched on a palm tree right outside the restaurant the family was building. They invited him in. Soon, Kiwi was helping with everything. His favorite place was in the kitchen. He loved it when his belly was full! One day, Kiwi decided that even though he was so very happy, he should pack his suitcase and go look for his family. Because he loved these people very much, he wanted to give them a special gift. He gave them the thing that mattered most to him in the world...his magic recipes.

But as he flew away, he turned around. Everyone looked sad. He felt sad. That's when he realized that they had become his family! So he turned around and flew back, and hasn't left since. His magic recipes fill the menu, reminding him his long journey and the wonderful friends he made along the way.

His new family even named the restaurant after the place where Kiwi learned to dance...
